The Gallery includes images of the borough's streets and buildings and portraits of people and communities. The Digital Gallery images are displayed as thumbnails. Full size images can be viewed by clicking on a thumbnail.
How do I obtain a copy of an image?
Photographic copies can be obtained from Tower Hamlets Local Studies and Archives (there is a charge for this service) or a maximum of 5 digital copies can be emailed to you. If you would like to use the images for publication or display please contact us at email@example.com
Herbert Bowen 1910s
Herbert Bowen (1894-1982), from Catford. Herbert lost his mum when he was 14, and went of to fight in the First World War when he was 18. He was badly wounded in the back by shrapnel. There was no work to be had when he came home, so he did whatever came along, and finally got a job at the Hotel Victoria in Central London, where he worked for many years. He married Mabel Clark of Stebondale Street and they settled on the Island where they brought up a family of seven children. From Mrs L. Reading
