The bomb that didn't go off - Lead Works, Millwall, Isle of Dogs, Second World War. At the beginning of the Blitz, a bomb was dropped on the Lead Works Millwall. It ricocheted of the wharf and fell into the mud on the foreshore. This was the first air raid that had occurred and people were ignorant about the dangers of an unexploded bomb; some of the workers wrapped rope around it and pulled it out of the mud with a crane. They had just loaded it up into a lorry when the Bomb Disposal Squad arrived - and ‘nearly had kittens!'. From Mrs Reading
