Tooke Street 1940s
George Thurgar Jnr., in the back garden of No.33 Tooke Street, Isle of Dogs, 1947. There is a chicken run in the background and a bed of Clarkia covering the site of the Anderson shelter. The deckchairs were made by George's dad. The bent chimney pot in the background was on a house in Havannah Street. At this time George was working with a shore gang for the New Zealand Shipping Company as a shore gang rigger. This involved cleaning ships' holds after discharge and keeping the ship in good order whilst the crew were on leave. The holds were filthy - they held frozen meat, tinned goods and butter and cheese; the ships were of the old type with refrigeration by brine pipes and as the men worked the pipes defrosted and lumps of ice came crashing down. George gave this up when he had the chance, to become a tally clerk. From G. Thurgar
