St. Luke's School 1880s
An early photograph of the children at St. Luke's School, Westferry Road, Isle of Dogs, probably taken on Empire Day 1880’s/1890. St. Luke's school stood opposite Strafford Street, on the site now known as St. Luke's Wharf, and occupied by the timber firm of Lenantons. The school itself moved to Saunders Ness Road, near Christ Church. The boy in the sailor suit, fourth row from the front has been identified as Arthur Thurgar, of No. 2 Tooke Street, Isle of Dogs. Arthur was born in 1880; he joined the Royal Navy at the age of 17, witnessed the Boxer Rebellion in China, and served on The Agamenon in the Dardenelles. From G. Thurgar
