How do I obtain a copy of an image?
Photographic copies can be obtained from Tower Hamlets Local Studies and Archives (there is a charge for this service) or a maximum of 5 digital copies can be emailed to you. If you would like to use the images for publication or display please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
Westferry Road 1930s
Cargo Fleet Iron Co., Westferry Road, Isle of Dogs, late 1930s. Back row: Mr Shrieve, Will Price (yard foreman), Arthur Burgess (later transport manager at Burgoynes), Bobby Fothergill (yardman). Names of men in front row - not known. Will Price worked at Cargo Fleet from about 1925 until the end of the Second World War. The firm used to bring in cargoes of steel on coasters, from Middlesborough, and then distribute sections to order, throughout the south and east, using local transport firms. The men worked in all weathers, from 8am to 5.30 pm, with a half-day on Saturdays. Basic yardman's pay was £2. 2s a week. by Mrs A. Price
