Hawkins & Tipson East Ferry Road 1920s
Hawkins & Tipson, Globe Rope Works, East Ferry Road, Isle of Dogs. A solid-tyred lorry. One worker recalls: ‘They had at least three lorries and one of them was continuously running backwards and forwards between Millwall and Blackwall works. We used to take rope on these lorries, to deliver to the ships. Once, we had to go all the way to Erith. We got there, and this ship was so far away, it looked small, in the distance. We hired a rowing boat to take the coil of rope to it, but as we were about to set off, a motor boat came up. On board was the captain of the ship. He saw us with his rope and told the sailors to take it in the motor boat. So the money we had for hiring the rowing boat - we shared it with these sailors. We would never have got to the ship in time with the rope anyway - the captain said they would have been sailing soon!' by F. Oliver
