Second World War. Gun site on the Mudchute; the guardroom on the top of the hill which was bombed in the early hours of the morning after the ‘All Clear'. Second land mine. ‘I ran back up to the top of the guns to get into the bunker for safety. If there had been a direct hit on the bunker it would have blown the place to pieces as it was full of ammunition. One day we had to stand and watch while 50 Dorniers came over and bombed Croydon, too far away to reach them. We fired at them on the way back.' by Mr Philips
