Millwall docks; Central Granary. “A marvelous building - I covered every inch of it from the basement to the top. I worked in there for 2 years as a docker - that granary, and that building and the four hoppers fully loaded could hold 60,00 tons. Each of the eight or ten floors held different grains - barley, wheat, oats, maize, soya beans. On each one there were pipes that went right through the building, that the grain went through, right down to the basement. Underneath was a set of scales where the grain was weighed into sacks and trucked into lorries. When the grain came in it was sucked up another set of pipes - like a giant Hoover, from the ship's hold or from the barges. I remember when they pulled that down in the 1960s. There was a little drinking club mainly for the foreman and staff but we used to go in there.. by B. Carr
