Description:
Top cargo being loaded onto a ‘Strik' Line ship in the Millwall Docks, 1960s. The load is probably light bulbs. Generally speaking, the stevedores had to load the ship with the heaviest cargo at the bottom and the lighter goods at the top but they also had to take into account the pattern of unloading at the various ports of call - this is why stevedoring was a semi-skilled job. by J.
