Cutler's Steel Works Westferry Rd 1970s
The gates of Cutler's Steel Works, Westferry Road, Isle of Dogs, in the winter of 1970. In the centre is Marie Vincent (nee Kinchin); the photograph was taken by a friend from Canada. On her left is Sandra Gillard from Hackney and on her right, Linda Godfrey from Three Colt Street. Marie made a trip down memory lane with her friends on this December day, to see the place where she grew up. She says: ‘I was so pleased to see the rail-way line still in the road and the name S.Cutler & Sons Ltd., still on the gates and the old St. Edmunds's School in the background. My earliest memory was of Dad driving his crane from one side of the road to the other, and I used to look out for him through the school railings. If I was lucky, he would throw me a farthing to spend in the tuck shop. One day I lost it and wouldn’t go back into school!’ by Marie Vincent
