The Gallery includes images of the borough's streets and buildings and portraits of people and communities. The Digital Gallery images are displayed as thumbnails. Full size images can be viewed by clicking on a thumbnail.
How do I obtain a copy of an image?
Photographic copies can be obtained from Tower Hamlets Local Studies and Archives (there is a charge for this service) or a maximum of 5 digital copies can be emailed to you. If you would like to use the images for publication or display please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
Westferry Road 1900s
Four friends, in the garden of a house in Westferry Road, Isle of Dogs. Harbinger School in the background. One of the couples is Mr and Mrs Moyse. Mr Moyse was a tally-clerk in the docks, and had previously worked in Westwoods and Burrells. Before he finally retired he was a gate-keeper at Spurlings, opposite the'Robert Burns'. Along Westferry Road in front of the school was the ‘Great Eastern'. the ‘Blue Anchor coffee shop, Arthur Hills' sweet shop, the homes of Mrs Johnson, the Newmans, the Boyses, the Paynes, Mr W. Trotman, the Bedfords, the Budds and the Windsors. On the corner was St. Cuthbert's Church. by S. Moyse
