St. Paul's Presbyterian Church 1930s
1930s. A gathering of Island women and children beside St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Westferry Road Isle of Dogs. (St. Mildred's House in the background). Includes: Mrs Simes, Mrs James, Mrs Evans, Mrs Dowler, Mrs Phillips and Mrs Garland. Mrs Evans (1900-1970) of Gaverick Street and Westferry Road, was a Warden of the Church, and helped look after it. During the Blitz she was found on the roof of the church with a stirrup pump. She said: “ You're not going to get my red carpet.” This carpet ran up the middle of the church and she wouldn't let anyone else touch it. by Mrs A. Kilgour
