How do I obtain a copy of an image?

Photographic copies can be obtained from Tower Hamlets Local Studies and Archives (there is a charge for this service) or a maximum of 5 digital copies can be emailed to you. If you would like to use the images for publication or display please contact us at localhistory@towerhamlets.gov.uk

Description:

The Island Horse Bus, c.1900, run by George Middleditch. Hackney drivers are in the back row. On the left is Albert Middleditch and second from the right is Robert Dodkin. In the middle row are the stage carriage (ie “bus”) drivers, with Bill Digby second from right. In front are the stable boys. Standing on the left is William Davieson, the farrier. He married George Middleditch's daughter, Annie. George's son, Arthur (not shown) married one of the Gaskin family, whose boot and shoe shop in Westferry Road is advertised on the bus. The bus company operated from premises at No. 227 Westferry Road; it was put out of business by the arrival on the scene of the London General Omnibus Company in 1913. by Mrs Perkins
