Docklands Settlement 1970s
Charlie Mingay, in front, second from left, at the annual dinner of the pigeon racing club. Date not known but before 1980. Could be at the Docklands Settlement, Christ Church Hall or at Woodstock Hall in Chrisp Street. The club used to race pigeons all over Europe. Charlie Mingay used to work at Tate & Lyles in Glengall Road before he retired in 1980. He worked there for about 50 years and received a TV and a gold watch as a leaving present. All the Mingays were born on the Island - at Tobago Street and Havannah Street before the family moved to Thermopylae Gate. There were four brothers - Charlie, Alf who moved to Cornwall, Fred who died on the Gletea when it was torpedoed during the Second World War, and J T who lives in Manchester Road. The sister, Mary, went to live in Islington and then moved to Friars Mead. Also Includes, Harry Young Jnr., third from left, facing camera, and Mr and Mrs Harry Young (club secretary), back wall, facing camera by C.
