1950s: Kate Elsey, who lived round Milwall as a young girl, and then moved to Ashford in Kent; she continued to go hop-picking from there and worked on the hop-picking machines when they came in. She lived in a hut at the hop-fields, with the other pickers from the Island, and is photographed here doing her washing in the tin tub which she brought with her. Mrs Warren, who also went hopping, recalls: ‘Before it was time to go down, we used to have a clear out (in the huts); the furniture was stored there during the year, and all we had to take with us was bedding and clothes.' by G.
