Westferry Road 1950s
J. Westwood & Co., Steel Erectors, Westferry Road, Isle of Dogs. General view of shop floor, probably 1950s. Bob Strudwick, who worked at Westwoods as a trainee draughtsman for four years in the 1950s, recalls: ‘The works were in two halves. The main works were on the river side of Westferry Road, while the much smaller sheet metal works were on the opposite side of the road. Behind the offices, towards the river front, were three or four main fabrication shops. Each of these was an open portal framed structure about 60 feet wide and 450 feet long. The two outer shops had sheeting on the portside face, as weather protection. Each shop had two overhead travelling cranes, lifting five tons each. In these shops, the steel was stocked, marked for cutting and drilling, painted and welded and bolted together into structure being fabricated. by Eileen Bannister
