Janet Street 1930
View of new flats being erected in Janet Street, Isle of Dogs, on behalf of the Isle of Dogs Housing Association in the 1933. In the foreground, the cottages which the flats were designed to replace. The Batten family lived downstairs in No. 34. Queenie Stanton (later Roberts) lived upstairs with her parents. The house next door belonged to Mr James Bennett and his wife Bridget - that could be one of their daughters in the doorway. No. 34 was next to Mark Middleditch (Mr Quay) Stables. The Battens had to move because of the rats. James (Jim) Batten was born in No. 34 in 1928. ‘Ennis' was the wire rope firm originally on the site of the new flats by IOD Housing Association
