The Gallery includes images of the borough's streets and buildings and portraits of people and communities. The Digital Gallery images are displayed as thumbnails. Full size images can be viewed by clicking on a thumbnail.
How do I obtain a copy of an image?
Photographic copies can be obtained from Tower Hamlets Local Studies and Archives (there is a charge for this service) or a maximum of 5 digital copies can be emailed to you. If you would like to use the images for publication or display please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
Launch Street 1900s
Lily Ward (later Hiscott), of No.38 Launch Street, holding tight to the new bicycle she has just received for her 16th birthday, in 1904. NB: The ‘Albone Ivel Ladies Cycle' made in Biggleswade in 1901 (Ivel a local river). Dan Albone produced the first ladies cycle in 1887. Similarities to the one in the photograph include: shape of main frame, no mudguard in front of front fork; almost straight un-cranked handlebar; front brake operated by rod; skirt guard made with string on rear wheel. by Miss E.
