Horse Bus to Millwall: “To get off the Island, most people used shank's pony, but there was a one-horse bus, no conductor, room for about 12 persons inside and two outside, and you had to climb up the wheel to get to the top. The driver pulled a strap to close the door, and if you wanted to alight, you poked your penny up the hole in the roof and nudged his back, when he would release the strap. At the journey's end anyone in the bus would collect the fares and pass them up, giving the tally. This bus ran fron the Dock House (Millwall Dock Entrance) to West India Dock Station. It was a boon on a wet night.” From the autobiography of Bert Hiscott, b.1888, of No.133 Westferry Road. by Miss E. Hiscott
