St. John's School 1890s
Lily (Lilian Daisy) Ward is the girl in front on the left of this photograph, dated 1897. She was born the youngest of nine children. The family lived at No.38 Launch Street, Isle of Dogs, a house which belonged to the owners of the nearby fertiliser factory where her father worked as an engineer. This photograph may have been taken at St. John's School, though Lily also went to Glengall Road School. She is wearing an attendance medal in the photograph. The teacher is Miss Rose Sole. When Lily left school she became an apprentice dress-maker at Glovers department store in Greenwich, and later she took charge of the apprentices and the work room. by Miss E. Hiscott
