Manchester Road 1910s
Railway brige, Manchester Road, Isle of Dogs, no date but possible 1920s or earlier. The bridge carried the trains of the Millwall Extension Railway across the road to the North Greenwich Station on the river's edge. The line closed in 1926, but was re-opened in 1987 to carry the Docklands Light Railway which had a terminus station at Island Gardens (now in 2001 the DLR runs through to Lewisham under the Thames). The bridge in the photograph was demolished before the Second World War and the urinal was also removed. Beyond the bridge the original houses of Manchester Road are visable; these were destroyed in the Blitz or during post-war re-building programmes. by Mr Phillips
