Royal Fusiliers Hockey Team, c.1909, whilst serving in Ireland. On the left in the front row, George Pye, who was born on the Isle of Dogs in the late 19th century. His father, William Pye, had come to live on the Island when the Millwall Dock was built in the 1860s; his job was to operate the bridge across the dock. His son George spent some time in the regular army and was a prisoner of war during the First World War; after being de-mobbed he worked in the docks until he was 70; then he got a job cleaning for the police. The Pye family still live locally. by George Pye Snr
