Divers employed by the Millwall Dock Company in about 1900. Edward Humphrey is seated second from the left. He was born in 1859 and worked for the company until his retirement. He lived in one of the pier head cottages at the dock entrance in Westferry Road. Divers were employed by the dock companies to carry out repairs to the lock gates and machinery and to do any other underwater work. These divers would have earned fifty shillings (£2.50) for a 48 hour week with two weeks paid holiday a year. Pensions were thirty shillings (£1.50) per week. Donated by W. E. Humphrey
