The Gallery includes images of the borough's streets and buildings and portraits of people and communities. The Digital Gallery images are displayed as thumbnails. Full size images can be viewed by clicking on a thumbnail.
How do I obtain a copy of an image?
Photographic copies can be obtained from Tower Hamlets Local Studies and Archives (there is a charge for this service) or a maximum of 5 digital copies can be emailed to you. If you would like to use the images for publication or display please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
The Conroy Family from Manchester Road, in c1918-1919. Alfred Conroy (1876-1943), worked a rolling mill at the local lead works. He married Alice (nee Fisher) in Limehouse c1897-1898. She was born at Custom House, (c1875-1971). Children back row are: Bill, born 1903, a shoe repairer with a shop in Stebondale Street; Grace, born 1899, worked at Pinchin and Johnson, married Mr Fitzpatrick; Alice born c1897, married J. Sparks; George (c1905-1988), worked at the lead works, lost part of a lung when young, became an overhead crane driver. Front left to right: Violet (1909-1920); baby Jessie, born 1916, married James Sturgess of Mellish Street; Henry, (c1911-1975) or 1912, married Dolly Ward (?) from Poplar, worked at the lead works, later for the PLA; baby Emma, born 1914 (donar of photograph) married Bob Gaskin a lighterman from Poplar; Elsie, married Edward (Ted) Sturgess, brother of Jimmy.
