The Gallery includes images of the borough's streets and buildings and portraits of people and communities. The Digital Gallery images are displayed as thumbnails. Full size images can be viewed by clicking on a thumbnail.
How do I obtain a copy of an image?
Photographic copies can be obtained from Tower Hamlets Local Studies and Archives (there is a charge for this service) or a maximum of 5 digital copies can be emailed to you. If you would like to use the images for publication or display please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
Three generations of Henry Burgess, of the Isle of Dogs, photographed in 1907. The eldest, on the right, aged about 50 was a blacksmith; on the left aged about 30, a stevedore; the youngest, centre, grew up to work in a firm of manufacturing chemists. The eldest was married to Alice Ann Gillam on 25.12.1872. His son Henry Percy born 29.8.1873, at No. 105 Crisp Street Bromley, married Rose Anne Kemp on 31.1.1900; their son Henry born November 1902, their third child. The eldest Henry's marriage certificate showed his father as Thomas Burgess, carpenter, and his wife's father as John Gillam oil miller. Donated by Mrs B. Clark
