“Two Islanders to be proud of” says Robert Taylor, who loaned this photograph. They are Charles Studd (seated) and Walter Coates. These young men were in the Bible Class at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church until the First World War. They both enlisted and became officers, After the war, Charles Studd (of Cahir Street) went to Canada to train as a Presbyterian Minister, as a missionary to Japan where he was killed in a motor accident. In 1960 Charles visited England and saw his old Bible Class teacher, George Taylor, then living in Hornchurch and aged 83. George died soon afterwards, and Charles himself died a year later.
