A ‘Beano’ from Newcastle Arms (now the Waterman’s), early 1950’s. L-R: unknown, Mrs Vincent, Phoebe - , Ada - , Mrs Mudd, Ada’s two daughters, Sophie Roberts, Sue Ruggles, Daisy Roberts ( later Woodard ). Like many pubs, The Newcastle ran a loan club; members paid in a weekly sum and could borrow money during the year or draw out their savings, with interest, in November. Club night was on a Monday, so club members stayed for a drink after paying up. Most pubs ran Beanos (outings) to Margate or Southend for regular customers, including members of the loan club.
