Island mothers from the Stebondale Street area in the late 1940s. This photograph celebrates and remembers some of the women who brought up large families on the Island in difficult conditions, who coped with war-time terrors and hardships and who lived on the see rising living standards and many other changes in the post-war years. Here, they are having one of their few breaks from the daily routine - a day out, probably at the seaside. The photograph probably taken before departure against a background of bomb debris. In the back row, from left to right: with married names first followed by single names where known: Mrs Power, Mrs Smith, Mrs Gimble (Cooper), Mrs Whiting (Linghorn), Mrs Gardner, Mrs Bown, and the last person on the right was a Stanley before her marriage. In front are: Mrs Franklin, Mrs Nudd, Mrs Cooper, Mrs Chappell (Paine) and last on the right Mrs Vincent (Holland). Donated by Unknown
