"At Yarmouth for an annual holiday in 1938 - William George Bennett, his daughter Pat and great-uncle William Burns. Bill Bennett was born in Westferry Road in 1904 and died in 1979. He began his working life as an apprentice cooper at Dunbar’s Cooperage, where he lost three fingers in an accident. As a result of this he could not finish his apprenticeship, nor join the Metropolitian Police as he had hoped, so he started at Lenanton’s Wood Wharf and worked there for 50 years. He married Martha (Pat) Bryant from Stratford their daughter Pat was born in 1935. They lived at 76 Westferry Road and then at 5 Maria Street. William Burns lived with his sister Alice and her husband Charles Bennett until they died and he continued living in the same house, but Pat remembers that all that generation had died before war broke out.
