William Thomas Willson, father of Bill Willson, an Island Councillor in the 1960s. Born and raised in Norton Folegate, Shoreditch, he spent most of his married life with his wife Rose in Meadows Dwellings, Bethnal Green. They lived in Harold Hill for a time and spent their last years on the Isle of Dogs. He worked on the railways, initially on the footplate of shunting engines for the Great Eastern Railway, eventually as driver for the three-wheeled Scammel Cabb shown here. His round of collections and deliveries took in most of the factories and wharves on the Island. His wife Rose was his “van boy” for many years. The photo was taken during World War Two - notice the hoods over the headlamps and the covers over the sidelights, which minimised visibility for enemy aircraft - and the driver!
