These are boys from Mellish Street who were members of the Millwall Pigeon Flying Club, around 1952. From the left: Wally Dowler (12); behind: Johnny Hannon (13); Jimmy Newberry (12); Maurice Marsh (12); Billy Dowler (11) in centre. Photograph taken in the the back yard of Geordie Patterson’s house -another club member. Wally Dowler recalls: “We would take our pigeons to the headquarters at Harbinger School on the Friday night. They were ringed and stamped for the races on Saturday morning. This was a popular hobby on the Island in the 1950s and we looked forward to it.” Donated by W.Dowler
