Cubitt Town School, date unknown, but before the First World War. Some shaven heads, probably reflecting a visit from the “nit nurse”; most children are dressed in layers of clothing, for warmth - the child with bare arms looks chilly; some are better dressed, better fed, than others, reflecting the fact that family incomes varied a good deal, depending on how many adults were working; some of these children would have had brothers and sisters of 14 and over who were already earning. Girls wore pinafores to protect their everyday clothes, these and the boys starched white collars represent hours at the wash tub or ironing board on the part of their mothers, who had probably been warned that a photographer was coming to school.
