Description:

In the square in front of the flats at Thermopylae Gate there used to be two shelters with seats for the elderly to sit and rest on. These gradually fell down over the course of time. In this photograph taken about 1921 the flats and house in Chapel House Estate were newly built - a ‘Garden City’ of houses with bathrooms and large gardens, part of the post war brief building boom. Among the families represented are those of: Kettle, Horsefield, Robinson, Deakin, Moulini, Hepworth, Freeman, Reeves, Rutkin, Kelly, Pavitt, Northcote, McSweeney, Cressall, Powell, Harris, Bulley, Templeman and Newby (Sidney and Winifred) . In the right hand back edge of picture is Lilian Clayden b.1915 with, in front of her Billy Clayden.
