Glengall Road School 1940s
Men of the Auxiliary Fire Service, Second World War, stationed at Glengall Road School (now Cubitt Town) sub-station. From top to bottom: MacDonald, Rosen, Cohen, Greenfield, Cohen and Cash. To the left, fire hoses drying out. These hoses could be hard to handle. One ex-AFS man, Mr A Sharpe, recalls the fire at Lenantons Wharf: We climbed a crane with our hoses to play down on the fire; there were three of us hanging on to the hose with a lot of water pressure coming through, not easy when standing on a crane. Finally we lashed the hose to the crane and got a breather. Suddenly a bomb dropped and the blast caught us - down we came, unhurt but bloody frightened!
