The Gallery includes images of the borough's streets and buildings and portraits of people and communities. The Digital Gallery images are displayed as thumbnails. Full size images can be viewed by clicking on a thumbnail.
How do I obtain a copy of an image?
Photographic copies can be obtained from Tower Hamlets Local Studies and Archives (there is a charge for this service) or a maximum of 5 digital copies can be emailed to you. If you would like to use the images for publication or display please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
Dockland Settlement 1935
Dockland Settlement No. 2, East Ferry Road, Isle of Dogs, members dressed for the Tudor Ball, 1935. Left to right: Violet Brunt (later McCarthy), Babs Peacock, Helen Hames, Renee Hames and George Hames. Mrs Hames made many of the costumes for the ball, which was attended by nearly 300 people; the band, Arthur Crane's ‘Black Dominoes', wore white ruffles and green tunics and played from a minstrels' gallery specially built for the occasion. The dancing lasted from 8pm until 3 the next morning, with supper at midnight.
