William and Joe Green 1917
William and Joe Green, of No 1, Claude Street, E14. 1917. William was in the Navy and then worked in the gas works in Creek Road, Deptford. He died in the 1930s. Joe lost his leg at the age of nine when he was knocked down by a motor bus in Westferry Road. Later he had a wooden leg. Because of this disability he was sent away to a ‘home’ to learn a trade - he wasn’t happy there and kept running away, only to be taken back by his older brothers! When he grew up he kept a boot and shoe repair shop in Eastferry Road
