Joe Green and Bill Pawley 1920s
Joe Green and Bill Pawley, both of Claude Street, E14. Joe repaired boots and shoes and Bill was a stevedore. There were houses on both sides of Claude Street in those days, each with two up and two down, kitchen in the back extension and toilet at the bottom of the garden. At the end of the Street, on the river bank, was an oil depot on Whinkley’s Wharf. This photograph, which was taken in the 1920s, has been clumsily ‘touched up’ - this explains the strange appearance of their eyes and teeth.
