What is the learners Support Fund
The Learner Support Fund exists to help students wishing to enrol on accredited courses to further their career or progression route, but who will find it difficult to undertake their course because of their financial circumstances.
Evidence of Low Income/Benefit
You must be prepared to show evidence of your eligibility. This will include evidence of your income and/or current benefit. A photocopy of this proof will be attached to your application form along with your proof of enrolment for consideration. This information is confidential and only authorised personnel will have access to it.
Who can apply?
You can apply to the Learner Support Fund if you are taking a course leading to a qualification and you are in need of financial support for exam fees and course materials, if:
• You have been resident in the UK or EU for the last three years
• You are not a full time student at another institute and eligible for a student loan
• You are not on New Deal
• You (or your parent/carer) are on a low income (under £15,000 per annum)
• You (or your parent/carer) are receiving a government benefit
• You are 16-19 years old, you are not in full time education and have no means of support. You may be entitled to a discretionary award.
How to apply at your local Idea Store or learning centre
If these conditions apply to you, please complete the application form clearly, using a ballpoint pen. If you do not provide the full information requested on the application form, it will not be possible to process your application.
Should your application for the Learner Support Fund be successful, your tuition fee will be completely waived but you will still need to pay any Examination Board fee .
Learners are advised that they cannot apply for LSF for the same course more than once in an academic year.
Application Procedures
Course Materials
If the Lifelong Learning Service (LLS) does not provide the books/materials required for your course, you will need to ask your tutor for written confirmation that the item(s) are crucial to you achieving your goal. You will need to purchase the item(s) and attach the receipt(s) to the application form. If approved, a cheque for the value of the books/materials will be sent to you. Proof of purchase is required for all refunds.
Appeals
If you do not agree with the Curriculum Manager’s decision you must appeal in writing to: The Learner Support Fund. Information, Advice & Guidance, The Shadwell Centre, 455 The Highway, London, E1W 3PH, within ten working days of receiving notification of the decision.
