Spitalfields Rate Book, 1700

Rate Book Index No. 11:
Hamlet of Spitalfields (Old Town), 1700 (Ref. STE/101)

This volume contains an assessment for both the poor rate and the scavenger rate for 1700, though on the spine of the modern binding it is described as "Standard" rate book. The area covered by the volume (i.e. the Old Town part of the Hamlet) is the southern portion of the Hamlet, bordered on the south and west by the boundaries of the Hamlet on the east by Brick Lane and on the north by Lamb Street and Browns Lane as illustrated by the map.

All names in the rate book have been included in the index; those which have been struck through are indicated by an asterisk. A question mark indicates doubt about the spelling of the name. This is the only rate book held for the Hamlet or Parish of Spitalfields. Rate books covering the period 1713 - 1846 (with gaps in the sequence) are among the records of the Tower Hamlets Commissioners of Sewers at the London Metropolitan Archives.

The alphabetical index has been compiled by Gary Haines.
