How do I obtain a copy of an image?
Photographic copies can be obtained from Tower Hamlets Local Studies and Archives (there is a charge for this service) or a maximum of 5 digital copies can be emailed to you. If you would like to use the images for publication or display please contact us at email@example.com
West India Docks 1940s
Second World War, Auxilliary Fire Service (AFS) Heavy unit Number one, based in ‘L' sub-station, West India Docks, Isle oF Dogs. Back row: Mess Manager (name unknown), Lesley Stewart, George Haward and Nobby Clarke. Front: Jim Devlin, Sam - , and Harry - . Out of this crew, four died in the Blitz. Sam was blown up at the beginning when a bomb fell opposite Poplar Baths killing 13 Fireman. It was 18 months before Sam's widow was granted a widow's pension - because no trace of his body could be found and ‘he could have run away'. From J. Devlin
