The Gallery includes images of the borough's streets and buildings and portraits of people and communities. The Digital Gallery images are displayed as thumbnails. Full size images can be viewed by clicking on a thumbnail.
How do I obtain a copy of an image?
Photographic copies can be obtained from Tower Hamlets Local Studies and Archives (there is a charge for this service) or a maximum of 5 digital copies can be emailed to you. If you would like to use the images for publication or display please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
The French family 1910s
The French family, of Maria Street (later Chapel House Street), Isle of Dogs. Standing on the left, Charlie French, (1890-1930) a stevedore, wearing his union badge, ; centre, his wife, Elizabeth Jane, nee Holmes, (1891-1963); on the right, Charlie's brother, Dennis French, also a stevedore. The children are, on the left: young Charlie French, (b.1912), later a crane driver; Arthur French, (b.1916), later a stevedore; and Ivy Matilda, (b.1914), who had walked through a puddle on the way to the photographer's studio and got her white shoes dirty.
