‘The Tooke Arms’ Westferry Road 1920s
Outing from ‘The Tooke Arms’. Mrs Florence Vincent (nee Eaton) writes: I was born on the Isle of Dogs at Janet Street Millwall. I am now 70 years of age and have many memories of the Island. The outing pictured took place very summer. There would always be plenty of children hanging around, because, as the coach started off, pennies were thrown and us kids would scramble for them. The wife of the owner of the pub was a real lady to us kids, her name was Mrs Turner. She is in the centre of the photograph with a veiled hat on. With her is Mrs Eaton (my mother), Mrs Baird, Mrs Darby, Bridgie O’Shea, Mrs Mann, Mrs Lawrence, Mrs Bennett and Mrs Everest. I think they went to Yalding in Kent, near the hop fields. It was the only day out my mum had; my eldest sister was in charge of us and we knew that we would have a stick of rock each the next morning. From Mrs F. Vincent
