Island Gardens 1950s
North Greenwich Bowls Club, 50th Anniversary Game, Island Gardens, 1951. Jim Tremain, George Holmes, Len Taylor, Harry Frost and Henry Conroy, with members of the opposing team. Squatting is George Archer. In the background, Arthur Negus and Ted Blackhall. The club, founded in 1901, was sometimes referred to as ‘the rate-payers' club in its early days, because most of the members were shop-keepers and business men. During the Blitz, the club became defunct, but it was started up again in 1948 by half-a-dozen enthusiasts, and was soon well under way again, with a very youthful membership, who were often directed to the cricket pitch and the putting green when they arrived for ‘away' matches! One of the regular outings was a Whit Sunday game at Newhaven Labour Club. The Bowling Club moved to a new site in Millwall Park in 1956, where it continued to flourish in the 1980s. by Tony Atkinson
