Inside a Mast House, on the Thames, London, about 1830. Ships were floated into a pool or dock beside the tall mast house, and the masts were lowered by crane into the ship. There was a mast house at Blackwall, known as Perry's Mast House, and another on the Isle of Dogs, where the modern Mast House Terrace is, It was in use in the 1780s and for about 50 years after that.
