How do I obtain a copy of an image?

Photographic copies can be obtained from Tower Hamlets Local Studies and Archives (there is a charge for this service) or a maximum of 5 digital copies can be emailed to you. If you would like to use the images for publication or display please contact us at

Margate, 1938. Josie Martinez (b.1936); Gladys Alice Maude Martinez (nee Wickingden, b.c.1910)Thomas Alfred Martinez (b.1900s), John Alfred Martinez (b.1932). This family lived in Chapel House Street. Gladys and Thomas both grew up on the Island. There had been another child, Joyce, the eldest, who died aged five in 1933. Thomas was killed during the Blitz. He was fire-watching at Locke Lancaster’s Lead Works, where he was employed, when he died during an air-raid on 8th October 1940.. Thomas’s father was Julius Martinez, possibly born in South American. His mother was Italian. Gladys had a brother, Sam Wickingden, who sold fireworks round the Island. Donated by John Martinez
