Photograph taken on July 28th, 1921 in Island Gardens, London E14. The occasion was a children’s entertainment, provided by the Lord Mayor’s Sunshine Fund, and attended by Princess Mary (only daughter of George V and Queen Mary). She went to similar events on the same afternoon at Kensington Gardens and Vistoria Park. The boy in the photo is remembered as “a scamp” and a much-loved local character. Princess Mary was born in 1897. In 1922 she married the 6th Earl of Harewood. Donated by Jill Fordham
