Bow Poor Rate Book December 1820
Bow Poor Rate Book December 1820 (ref L/SMS/B/2/34 [BOW/156])
This volume forms part the extensive archives of the civil parish of St. Mary, Stratford Bow (otherwise Bow). A detailed catalogue of the archives is available online (ref L/SMS). The volume is one of a series of poor rate books spanning the period 1773 - 1867.
The poor rate was a local tax, based on property, levied for the maintenance of the poor of the parish. The assessment is arranged in a geographical format, beginning at Bear Binder Lane and ending at Bow Middle Buildings. See the accompanying map showing the supposed route of the assessment. The information is arranged in four columns. The first column gives the rateable value of the property, the second the name of the owner (tenants names are sometimes also included here); the third column gives a brief description of the property (tenants names are sometimes shown here also); and the fourth column shows the actual amount to be paid.
The index of names was compiled by Madeleine Barr-Hamilton. An * indicates that the first name is abbreviated in the original document.
