Israel Rosenberg Census Biography

Israel Eickman lived in Bethnal Green from before 1901 and later at 220 St. George Street in 1918. He was Jewish, originally of Russian nationality. He changed his name to Israel Rosenberg by 1918.

His identity book (P/ROS/4) tells us he was born in 1869 the son of Lazurus and Anna Eickman. He served in the Russian army 1890-1893. In 1918 his occupation was a 'bookmaker (caster)' (for Cohen and Company of Hanbury Street). He married Edith Rosenberg (formerly Green; her birthplace is also given as Russia).

He had six children, 2 daughters and 3 sons, born between 1894 and 1908. The two oldest children, Hetty and Leah, worked as a furrier (liner) and shop assistant respectively. The four younger children were of school age. His son, Lance Corporal Lewis Rosenberg went onto serve with HM Forces.

At Tower Hamlets Local History Library and Archives, we hold the family’s papers and they provide a wonderful insight into their lives in early 20^th century London. The papers include the children’s swimming certificates, small sketches and watercolour paintings by Lewis Rosenberg and a trade union membership card for Israel Rosenberg.
