Becoming confident in Digital Skills (Beginners Entry 2)
Course Title: Becoming confident in Digital Skills part 1 & 2 (Entry 2)
Brief course description: This course is for you if you already have some basic experience with digital devices and want to become more confident using them. It builds on beginner knowledge by helping you improve their use of digital tools for daily life, learning, and preparing for work.
Part 1 focuses on developing confidence in using common apps and tools like Microsoft Word, internet browsers and email. Part 2 introduces more independent digital tasks like online form filling, safe sharing, organising files, and using AI tools to support writing, planning and solving problems. The course also covers essential digital safety skills and the use of accessibility features.
Objectives:
- Create and format a short document using Microsoft Word (e.g. letter, CV, report).
- Save, organise and find files and folders on a computer or device.
- Communicate with colleagues and classmates using email, including replying, forwarding, CCing, including links and attaching files.
- Fill in online forms and job applications accurately.
- Recognise secure websites and avoid online scams or suspicious messages.
- Search online using keywords to find local services, work or learning opportunities.
- Use AI tools (e.g. Copilot or ChatGPT) to help with writing or generating ideas.
- Take screenshots or photos of information and upload or share them safely.
- Use accessibility tools (e.g. screen zoom, voice typing, or translation features).
- Plan and organise a community event using Digital tools.
Entry requirements:
You should have completed a beginner course (such as First Steps or Digital Skills for ESOL) or have some basic confidence using a computer or phone. You should be able to type a short sentence and follow instructions in English at Entry 3 or above.
Equipment required :
Some sessions may take place online. You will be notified in advance if a session is due to take place online. You may join these sessions using any personal device or computer - wifi is also available in the Idea Stores. If you do not have a device available, there may be support available for a loan device.

- Essential Digital Skills Entry 3 (Gateway qualification)
- ESOL Entry 3 or Level 1 English (depending on level)
- Creative or community-based digital courses
What examination is there:
There is no examination for this course. You will agree learning goals with your tutor which you must achieve by the end of the course.
How will I know I am making progress:
At the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about which of your digital skills you need to practise most and help you create an individual learning plan. Throughout the course, you will have a tutorial meeting to discuss your strengths, areas for improvement, and any problems you may have. You will keep a folder with your work, which will help you review your learning outside of class. Your tutor will give you regular feedback on your class work and homework to help you improve. To make progress, you need to attend all your classes and do work outside of class.
