Course Title: First Steps in Digital Skills: using computers and smartphones Part 1 & 2 (Complete Beginner)
Brief course description:
Want to learn how to use a computer, tablet or smartphone? This course is perfect if you’re new to technology and want to build confidence using digital devices for everyday life.
Part 1 - 22.5 hour course (over 9 classes)
Part 1 focuses on building basic confidence in using devices and understanding digital terms.
Objectives:
- Turn on my phone/computer, connect to trusted Wi-Fi at the Idea Store, so I can get online without using mobile data.
- Open apps and type short messages, so I can confirm my class time with my tutor on WhatsApp or SMS.
- Use the camera to take a clear photo and find it again, so I can show ID or a letter when asked.
- Search the web for “opening times” and follow a safe link, so I can plan my shopping trip.
Part 2 - 22.5 hour course (over 9 classes)
Part 2 develops these skills further, helping you use digital tools more independently.
Objectives:
- Save important photos/files in named albums/folders, so I can quickly find my documents when needed.
- Fill in a simple online form (name, address) and press submit, so I can sign up for a class or service.
- Create a memorable passphrase and spot fake pop-ups/messages, so I can keep my device and data safe.
- Use Maps to find a bus route to my class and share it, so I can arrive on time.
Entry requirements:
No previous experience needed. You must be able to follow simple spoken instructions in English. An initial assessment will help ensure the course is right for you.
Equipment required :
You do not need any additional equipment for this course.
What courses can I go on to:
- Digital Skills for ESOL: First Steps in Microsoft Office (Entry 1–2)
- Becoming Confident in Digital Skills (Entry 2)
- Essential Digital Skills Entry 3
- Other beginner courses in ESOL or adult learning depending on need and level.
What examination is there:
There is no examination for this course. You will agree learning goals with your tutor which you must achieve by the end of the course.
How will I know I am making progress:
At the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about which of your digital skills you need to practise most and help you create an individual learning plan. Throughout the course, you will have a tutorial meeting to discuss your strengths, areas for improvement, and any problems you may have. You will keep a folder with your work, which will help you review your learning outside of class. Your tutor will give you regular feedback on your class work and homework to help you improve. To make progress, you need to attend all your classes and do work outside of class.
